Or perhaps the situation is, as many fear, even worse than this. Perhaps you, Americans, no longer hold the truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence - "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" - to be so self-evident? How else to explain the nearly complete acquiescence of your society to this new law, and to all the abuses, from the launching of a disastrous war on demonstrably false pretenses, to torture and indefinite detention, unending occupation, unconstitutional eavesdropping, and other betrayals of our founding ideals, that have led up to its passage last week?
What have you got to say, AmeriKKKa?

You are really laughable. You try and lecture us on views of equality but you end your post with derogatory name calling.
Granted the war in Iraq is not popular. But when has war ever been popular within a Democratic Republic? Never to my knowledge.
And in response to whether we still hold the truths in our Declaration of Independence as well as our Constitution to be true: We do. We struggle every day to uphold those lofty goals. I will be the first to admit that throughout our history we have had our dark moments, though what person or nation has ever been perfect? We declared our independence in 1776 from the most democratic nation in the world in hopes of setting up a far more democratic and equal society. We have made many mistakes, which we strive to learn from each day, and I am sure that we will make many more. But "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is still very much a part of who we are. If it were not, why would so many people immigrate to our country each year?
If you read the preamble of our Declaration closely it says, "...that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights..." It is a fundamental of the American Dream that each person be of equal legal status regardless of religious beliefs. Whether or not our armed forces are in Iraq for the pursuit of oil aside, we have provided billions in both public and private funds for the development of schools, hospitals, and other social institutions in Iraq that accept and serve both men AND women. (equality). In their most recent elections everyone over a certain age regardless of gender, race, or religion was permitted a vote. How is that bad? It isn't. America is a great country filled with great people. We do the world so much good and yet people scorn us. Who is the first to send money, financial aid, emergency caregivers and volunteers when natural disasters occur? The USA. Who sent us money when a hurricane basically destroyed the city of New Orleans? Not many, that is for sure. So I advise you: think before you speak. Yes, I believe that you have the freedom of speech; but be sure of ALL of whom you criticize before you do.
